What is the Meaning of OKOBAN® (video)

Why Okoban® ?

The Okoban system provides secure unique codes for baggage and other personal items at risk of getting lost (passports, laptops, tablets, keys, purses, luggage, cameras) linking these items to their owners without exposing any personal information.  Users purchase Okoban UID tags and attach them to their items.  The user registers the UID for free at Okoban.com and enters their contact information. If an item is found, the owner immediatly receives an email and text message notifying them where their item can be found.

Okoban is used at more than 2,200 airports worldwide and on 400 airlines. It is the first system designed for “Frequent Finders” of lost valuables, such as airline baggage service offices, hotels, car rental, rail, coach and ferry lost and found offices, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and police agencies.

Airlines can use the Okoban system to automatically notify passengers when their lost property is located. Okoban is directly linked to the SITA/IATA WorldTracer system that makes it possible for airlines to return found property faster and improve customer service.

Purchase includes lifelong coverage in the Okoban system and is provided as a service to the travel industry by Travel Sentry and its more than 300 partners worldwide.  The Okoban system can be used by anyone who has found an item with an Okoban UID.  The finder can simply go to Okoban.com and enter the UID and where the item was located.

Oops! iForgot My New iPad on the Plane; Now What?

We found this terrific Wall Street Journal article about how many iPads and Kindles are left in airplane seat pockets and the problem the airlines have returning these valuables. After 30 days, the airlines sell the lost items as salvage. Now, your secure Okoban tag allows the finder to contact you immediately, notifying you that your item was found and where you can recover your lost valuable, maybe even before you leave the airport.

iPad found me at airport

“Our flight arrived in Chicago late. I was traveling with my two young children with all of the expected paraphernalia (stroller, carry-on luggage, books).

With all of the activities of exiting the aircraft, gathering up all of our stuff, my daughter left our iPad in the seat pocket of the airplane. We left the airplane and never knew we’d left the iPad behind. Fortunately, my husband had placed an Okoban tracking tag on the iPad.

We were at baggage claim when my cell phone rang and let me know that the iPad was waiting for us at the lost and found. Can you believe this? My iPad was found and reported to me before I ever knew I had lost it. Wow.

I called and picked up the iPad and thanked the lost and found attendant. You know, there are a lot of nice people in this world. Thank goodness we had placed those Okoban tracking tags on our valuables. Okoban saved the day.”

My lost passport found me in Germany!

I was traveling through Germany with some friends from school.  We had stopped at a café and then hopped on a bus to our next stop.  While I was on the bus, I checked my email.  I was shocked to see an email from Okoban saying that my passport had been found.  I thought for sure it was a SPAM message or a mistake but as I checked my bag, i found my passport was missing.

I called the number in the email and sure enough the café we had stopped at and they had the passport waiting for me.

I was so grateful that I had an Okoban tag on my passport and the waiter was kind enough to take the time and enter it as found.  I can’t imagine what would have happened if I didn’t have the Okoban tag.  It could have been mailed back to the US Department of State or to my home, and then where would I be? Traveling through Europe with no passport?

I had no idea my passport was lost and probably wouldn’t have figured out where I had lost it.  So glad I was able to enjoy the rest of my vacation rather than spend time at the Embassy getting a new passport.
